LEAFHOPPER CAPELLA 12’ x 16'
Laser cut stainless steel, tempered laminated glass, LED lights.
Permanently installed at Hillside Park in Milwaukie, Oregon
A prismatic arch inspired by the Cicadellidae family.
There are at least eight varieties of Leafhopper endemic to the Milwaukee area. Gentle to humans, the miniature Leafhopper solely drinks leaf juice and can hop up to 100 times their height! As part of the family Cicadellidae, alongside Cicadas and Tree Hoppers, they sing together in groups, creating synchronized harmonies. Instead of producing audible sounds through the air, Leafhoppers transmit sonic vibrations through plants. These community oriented insects imbue the landscape itself with musicality. Their vivid iridescence and colorful patterns and stripes are a delightful reminder that instead of traveling far away, we can simply look a little closer to discover the natural wonders that surround us.
