Dragonflies have been on Earth for about 300 million years. They appeared long before dinosaurs and some of their ancient relatives had wingspans over two feet.
Akitsu, Dragonfly in Japanese, is part of an ancient name for Japan- Akitsushima (Dragonfly Island). Along a latitude shared with northern Japan, these lanterns reflect Pacific Rim landscapes where dragonflies are bio-indicators of healthy wetlands. Dragonflies are closely tied to aquatic biomes and often symbolize transformation, starting life in water before emerging into the air. These lanterns honor the Black Petaltail - a distinctive, ancient looking Dragonfly native to the Pacific Northwest.
